Fall Favorites: Plaid

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

I live in flannels and plaid year round, but they are especially a staple for fall. Paired with a beanie, jeans, and a pair of combat boots is a perfect fall outfit, and especially a great one for college students. Put together, but casual and comfy. My collection of plaid shirts is growing, and a few on this list might be making their way into my closet very soon.

Technology and Self-Expresssion

I found an article the other day while scrolling through one of the many forms of social media I partake in, and found an article about the new Apple watch. In this article (link) they talked about how this watch will shape the future of fashion, and being an avid fashion lover and working in a clothing store, I found this article very interesting, it is a short read, but here are my thoughts...

The apple watch claims to be customizable but "the Apple Watch comes in only three near-identical face styles and half a dozen band-types..." Apple has a huge social imprint, and if these Apple watches take off, everyone is wearing virtually the same thing, and your ability to portray your style is diminished.

"The watch is no doubt an indication of how Apple will approach future fashion products, offering the masses a constrictive framework in which to dress themselves, all under the guise of customizable “self expression.”" Under this guise, Apple could single handedly change the face of fashion from a form of self expression to a system where you choose A, B, or C, and the choice you make is "self expression." No longer is style something you choose, but something the framework of society chooses for you.

While this idea of Apple taking over fashion is a long ways away, this could happen, and it's important to be able to see it coming. The article ended with this: "The more Apple invades the fashion market, the more it will look to create a robotic consumerist culture (something it’s already done with tech)—in turn manipulating the greatest enjoyments of style and personal expression." I personally love Apple products, I own an iPhone and a MacBook, but when does the Apple monopoly end. At computers and phones, or fashion? I express myself through clothes, I work in the retail industry, and I pride myself in my unique sense of style, which I don't want to be taken away from me.

Kind of a random post for this space, but this struck a chord with me, and maybe it will impact you too :)

Fall Favorites: Destroyed Denim

1 | 2 | 3 | 4

For fall, I'm loving destroyed denim. Something about the grunge-y-ness of it all screams fall. Pair these jeans with moto boots, a slouchy sweater or flannel, and you have an awesome fall look. I just bought the first pair from Lucky Brand, and I'm so in love! Maybe they will make an appearance in an outfit post sometime soon. I'm making Fall Favorites a weekly thing throughout the end of October, so keep checking back in, for my fall staples.

Mood Board | 2

Holding on to the last bits of summer with this mood board today. I love florals, bright colors and exploring during the summer, but fall is just around the corner and I'm so excited for that too!

Dorm Room DIY

In my latest post I showed my dorm room, and it had craft projects I had made to decorate it. Today, I'm going to share a little bit about my process.

The Delta Delta Delta canvas I painted a dark purple, after that dried I painted a white wash over it (watered down white paint). I then made a delta stencil, painted them silver, and free-handed the words underneath. This took me about 2 day with drying time etc.

The stand up letters seen on the book shelf in black and white are cardboard letters found at the craft store and then wrapped in wash tape. This took me about 1 day. Anyone can do these, they are so easy, even if you aren't crafty at all!

These next 3 projects are for those that are a little more crafty! For the Seattle Skyline canvas I used the same purple paint I had used for the Delta Delta Delta canvas and painted that, let it get tacky, then used a brush with just water to brush over and create a water color gradient. Just play with it until you get it how you like! After that dried I free-handed a skyline in black.

The two letters with skyline on them are wood letters I painted with 2 coats of black, and then free-handed the skyline, and painted with 2 coats of silver paint. a little more artistic talent is needed for these, but only took me a few days to complete with drying time!

The last project I made for my room was the black and white prints I attached to christmas lights with clothes pins I painted black.

This project was the easiest but most time consuming of all of them! All I did was collect the photos I wanted to print, then in iPhoto, cropped them to squares, turned them black and white, and adjusted brightness and contrast until I loved how they looked, then printed. It was super easy, and I printed about 50 pictures to decorate with.

I hope this post gives you some ideas to decorate your room, or inspires you to just get a little crafty!

Room Tour

So I know it's been a while... but Recruitment for my sorority is over and I'm back and am going to try to stay back! I moved into my room at my sorority about 2 weeks ago and it got decorated super cute for recruitment, and I got some pictures for you all.

My room is pretty small, and it's a double, but I love it, and it really has everything I could need. These pictures are from when it was staged during recruitment, and it looks nothing like this now (I'm definitely a very messy person!). Just a little peak into my college life so far. I'm hoping to share lots more soon! Also a peak into the decorations in a future post!
